France records 70 cases of Covid-19 in schools since lifting lockdown”

He mentioned that the new cases were registered in about 50 schools, which has now been closed again.

At least 70 cases of the coronavirus were reported among students at nursery and primary schools in France since May 11, when 1.4 million children returned to their schools.

Education Minister Jean-Michel Blanquer told a radio station Monday that the individuals had most likely been infected prior to returning to school.

The government claims four-year-olds are capable of social distancing, but it is fighting a war of words with teachers, parents and doctors who say it is "too risky" to let children return to schools.

When it started gradually reopening schools last Tuesday, France had just under 27,000 coronavirus deaths and 178,000 total cases.

The situation highlights the precarious situation the French government is finding itself in as it seeks both to reassure the public that the country is moving forward past coronavirus and to react prudently to safeguard public health.

Eight schools have been closed in one city in northern France after a child tested positive for coronavirus.

Some 40,000 nursery and kindergarten schools were allowed to reopen last week, though attendance was not mandatory.

It comes after a child in a reception class - which went back to school last week - was confirmed to be carrying the virus.

Authorities said that most of the affected schools will be able to reopen by May 25.

As of Monday, France has recorded 179,693 COVID-19 cases, the sixth highest number in the world, with its death toll at 28,111.

The 9-year-old boy in Marseille was one of 125 children in France now with the syndrome.

In Berlin's Spandau neighborhood, one school was ordered temporarily closed on the weekend after it emerged that a teacher with Covid-19 had contact with two elementary classes, an after-school care program and other teachers.
