German cafe has customers wear pool noodles to enforce social distancing”

Instead of using floor marks and perspex screens to separate people, cafe owners distribute straw hats with two colorful swimming noodles attached to the top.

The reopening of this German cafe went swimmingly.

"It's the ideal way to keep customers separate - and fun", she said of the local TV company RTL, which is filming the reopening of cafes and restaurants.

"Today it is like this: distance measurement", she wrote in the caption.

To celebrate their reopening, owner Jaqueline Rothe posted a photo to the cafe's Facebook page showing customers sitting at tables casually enjoying their meals like they don't have a flotation device fixed to their heads. She said it was a local TV company, RTL, which was filming the reopening of cafes and restaurants, that came up with the genius idea.

"It's a ideal joke, and it's very amusing".

The cafe has 36 tables inside and also had about 20 tables outside, which would cater to customers who enjoy the outdoors a bit more. Others have questioned just how sanitary the move is if customers are reusing the pool noodle hats, and how often the cafe is properly disinfecting them.

Rothe spoke to CNN and explained that they had cut their seating capacity in half to help enforce social distancing measures.

"We'll see what to expect when Germany opens up more, more people are allowed to travel, and more tourists are coming in the next few weeks".

Germany was able to lift some restrictions when Chancellor Merkel said that the country has now passed phase one of the pandemic.

However, Merkel warned that Germany risks a new spike in infections if people stop adhering to physical removal measures.

Germany has recorded over 174,400 coronavirus cases and 7,884 deaths, according to the latest data collected by Johns Hopkins University.
