Hurricane Hunters investigate what could become season’s first storm in the Atlantic

Hurricane Hunters investigate what could become season’s first storm in the Atlantic”

The National Hurricane Center said the system had an 80 percent chance of becoming a tropical or subtropical depression or storm - and that could happen as soon as today. Regarding its forecast track, Arthur will remain well offshore the east coast of Florida, Georgia and South Carolina Sunday.

One to 3 inches of rain is possible on the North Carolina coast Sunday night and Monday, the weather service says. The National Hurricane Center has issued a Tropical Storm Warning for portions of North Carolina, including Cape Hatteras and the Outer Banks.

If the upper-level low to our west - accompanied by a dip in the jet steam - is quick to arrive, it may slingshot Arthur to the northeast, passing over the open Atlantic but bringing an increased rip current risk from the Outer Banks of the Carolinas to southern New England.

When it becomes a tropical storm, it will be named Arthur. Arthur is expected to strengthened over the next several days to maximum winds of 60 miles per hour.

Per the Saturday afternoon forecast, the center of the tropical system is expected to pass near or just east of the North Carolina coast on Monday.

Okulski said Horry County and the Grand Strand area face the greatest chance of bands of showers caused by Tropical Storm Arthur.

A tropical storm is a cyclone with sustained wind speeds averaging 38 miles per hour; any faster, and the storm develops into a hurricane.

Technically, hurricane season has not officially started as it runs from June 1 through the end of November, according to NOAA. Unsafe marine conditions are also expected, with seas building to 8 to 10 feet, creating treacherous conditions for mariners.

Periods of moderate to heavy rainfall are possible mainly along the coast, with the potential for localized minor flooding of low lying areas. Rough weather is expected to spread northward along parts of the East Coast through the rest of the weekend and early next week. Rainfall at the rate of two inches per hour triggered flash flood warnings in the Miami-Dade area where there was lightning and gusty winds on Saturday night.

Mr Caines added, “Due to Covid-19, the Emergency Measures Organisation has been meeting on a regular basis, and tomorrow as part of our normally scheduled meeting, Tropical Storm Arthur will feature prominently in our discussions.”. Heavy rain totaled 5.76 inches, stopping short of the city's rainiest May day record of 6.60 inches set on May 27 in 1959.
