McIlroy, Johnson win Driving Relief skins game in playoff

McIlroy, Johnson win Driving Relief skins game in playoff”

"The ones that don't, I don't see as much", Trump told NBC during the broadcast of a golf tournament in Florida that included McIlroy and three others playing for charity.

Trump's contribution to the first male golf on live TV in more than two months had the potential to inject a huge dose of controversy to the much-heralded match that saw McIlroy win the freaky nearest-the-pin finale on the first extra hole that was worth $1.1m and allowed him and Dustin Johnson to beat Rickie Fowler and the big-hitting Matthew Wolff at Seminole Golf Club in Florida.

Raising more than $5.5 million through sponsors and donations for COVID-19 relief, the competition quickly trended on social media, as golf-starved fans reveled in seeing their favourite players compete in unique circumstances. "We don't want them to be having to wear masks". In the end, total donations exceeded $5 million. It made them look a bit like the rest of us who may have played this weekend in the welcoming warm New York Metro-area weather ... minus the combined $155 million in career PGA Tour earnings the four have won.

It meant McIlroy was responsible for winning eight skins and contributing £1m, with Johnson claiming three skins.

Paul Azinger, one of the NBC color commentators, reported at the beginning of the match that the latest betting line he saw required gamblers to lay out $22 to win $10 if their money was on McIlroy and Johnson. At one point, Fowler made six birdies over a nine-hole stretch and was the sharpest around the greens.

Farmers Insurance has pledged $1 million to fund a birdie and eagle pool that will benefit Off the Plate, which is helping frontline employees and healthcare workers during the coronavirus pandemic.

Dustin Johnson of the United States (L) and Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland play a shot on the 14th hole during the first round of the WGC - HSBC Champions at Sheshan International Golf Club on October 25, 2018 in Shanghai, China. "It was an awesome day - all of us out here for a great cause". We just went through an unprecedented time so it was nice to get back out there.

McIlroy and Johnson are playing for the American Nurses Foundation.

"I'm proud to be a part of an event to entertain people at home on a Sunday, but to raise money for people who really need it, " McIlroy said. "It's a wonderful thing to see".

During the 10 minute interview, Trump said he was eager to have live games back on despite the coronavirus pandemic.

The US President said things would soon be back to normal and he was exhausted of watching old tournaments. "We're getting it back".

U.S. President Donald Trump dialed in to the golf broadcast to applaud the event, saying that live sports are good for the collective "psyche".

"A lot of them are very political, actually", Trump said.

"We want to be back to normal where you have the big crowds, and they're practically standing on top of each other and they're enjoying themselves, not where they're anxious", he said.

Not a moment too soon.
