Preakness rescheduled amid coronavirus pandemic

Preakness rescheduled amid coronavirus pandemic”

Horse racing is in a state of transition at a time usually reserved for Triple Crown season.

Hogan and the Maryland Jockey Club announced in mid-March, not long after the postponement of the Kentucky Derby, that the Preakness would be moved because of the novel coronavirus pandemic. The third leg of the Triple Crown, the Belmont Stakes in Elmont, N.Y., has yet to be rescheduled.

"We all wish we could have been together today to celebrate the Preakness but we stayed home and stayed safe and now we can look forward to Preakness 145 on October 3", said Stronach. Customarily five weeks after the Derby, it was slated for June 6 this year prior to COVID-19 developments.

The parking lot of the track is now being used as a drive-thru coronavirus testing center.

The new date, first leaked earlier this month when a Baltimore TV station reported NBC had reserved time to air it, positions Pimlico's signature race four weeks after the September 5 Kentucky Derby.

"Under normal circumstances, I would be standing at Pimlico with you, presenting the Woodlawn Trophy to the victor of the 145th Preakness Stakes", Hogan said.

"These are not ordinary circumstances", Hogan said. The 145th running of the Triple Crown race will take place October 3, 2020, at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan announced May 16.

This story will be updated following the official announcement made by Belinda Stronach, head of The Stronach Group.

More details on Preakness 145 and the 96th Black-Eyed Susan Stakes will be released in the coming months. The Kentucky Derby was switched from May 2 to September 5, and the New York Racing Association is trying to determine the best date for the Belmont, originally scheduled for June 6.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said May 16 that horse racing at tracks across the state will be allowed to resume June 1 without spectators.

Should the Belmont Stakes be moved to a date between the Derby and Preakness, it would mean a Triple Crown could be clinched in Baltimore for the first time. Tens of thousand fans usually gather in the infield of the expansive facility to drink, bet, socialize and listen to bands, but InfieldFest 2020 has already been canceled. This year there will be four weeks between the two races.
