Rocky COVID-19 nurse tested again as taskforce is set up

Rocky COVID-19 nurse tested again as taskforce is set up”

While over 700 Rockhampton residents were tested on the weekend - and a second positive test on the nurse who tested positive last week dispelled any possibility of a false-positive result - questions remain regarding how the case made its way into the facility.

"That internal investigation will be undertaken by the HHS but as I've outlined, we will have an independent investigation", he said.

Residents of a central Queensland aged care facility have been evacuated in a bid to stop a possible outbreak of coronavirus.

Deputy Premier Steven Miles and Chief Health Officer Jeannette Young revealed this during a press conference outside the North Rockhampton Nursing Centre this morning seeking to address community concerns that the facility could turn into a coronavirus hotspot like Australia has seen erupt in other states.

Mr Miles said a further 1534 tests were conducted over the past 24 hours.

"Queensland has had two new cases confirmed overnight", she said.

iPads were being provided to the nursing home residents to allow them to have contact with their families during their time in isolation.

Interestingly, another Queensland case announced yesterday involved someone who had flown back to Sydney from overseas, completed their 14-day quarantine and then flown home to Brisbane - before testing positive.

"Our elderly Queenslanders are the most vulnerable to coronavirus and residents across all 16 state-run homes must be the priority and we can not have two sets of rules".

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said yesterday that it was "not acceptable" for anyone to go to work sick.

"We will need to wait 12 more days before we know none will get sick". "We are still awaiting 37 tests that are outstanding but honestly we are very relieved with the news that we are hearing at the moment".

Public health officers directly contact all relevant individuals connected to a confirmed case of COVID-19.

She said the next 11 days would be critical to see if new cases emerged and urged locals to get tested if they felt even mild symptoms.

Accompanied by Deputy Premier and Health Minister Steven Miles, Dr Young is also expected to check the facility's pandemic plan, other protocols in place and how often temperature checks were being performed on staff, after the nurse apparently passed that testing while sick.

Dr Young says they are still investigating where the nurse may have contracted the virus but says it's unlikely it happened in Rockhampton.
