T20 WC postponement could pave the way for IPL: Mark Taylor

T20 WC postponement could pave the way for IPL: Mark Taylor”

Taylor's inferences are based on the logistical ordeal of hosting a global event in the Coronavirus world along with the fact that Cricket boards will look to serve their own financial interests as the sport returns from its impasse.

The Hindu understands that with Australian government keen on charting a roadmap for resuming sport, the ICC Board is likely to give itself some more time before taking a final call about the fate of the tournament. In the meantime, Taylor, believes that it could be a chance for the Board of Control for Cricket in India to host the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Meanwhile, the ICC Board video-conference is also likely to kickstart the election procedure for the successor of Shashank Manohar as independent chairman.

The Board member, however, said that Cricket Australia (CA) wouldn't be too unhappy if the World T20 is shifted to 2022 but if members decide that bilateral series are more important than it won't be able to discount that.

"The first option is having the World T20 as per schedule with a 14-day quarantine and crowds being allowed", he said.

However, there is a growing feeling within cricket's global community that fulfilling a competition involving 15 different teams flying into Australia in five months' time represents too much of a logistical nightmare.

The sources within the cricketing governing body recently also confirmed that the T20 World Cup will be the topmost agenda in the video conference meeting.

"They are potentially talking about postponing the October event (Australia's T20 World Cup) for February of next year, The problem with that is England I think are supposed to tour India in February of next year".

A switch to early 2021 has previously been mooted, but there is no obvious window for it as India's lucrative five-match Test series with England is slated to start in late January. The hardest thing about all of this, the world events, they fund the smaller nations. "So, no World T20 or no ICC World Cup, no money and their game surely goes that way".
