Trump softens on cutting funding to WHO

Trump softens on cutting funding to WHO”

Have not made a final decision.

But the U.S. China now only pays for contributions, according to a draft letter written by Trump to WHO Director-General Detros Received by Fox News.

Still, may 14 the United States administration announced the partial resumption of funding to the world health organization.

It has been a month since Trump announced a halt to the funding, accusing the WHO of having "failed in its basic duty", adding that "it must be held accountable", amid criticisms both from authorities at home and all over the world at a time when coronavirus infections still soared.

US President Donald Trump said on Saturday his administration was considering numerous proposals about the World Health Organization, including one in which Washington would pay about 10 percent of its former level.

'The WHO Constitution says that each Member State must 'respect the exclusively worldwide character of the Director-General and the staff and not to seek to influence them, " the statement said.

The report said the United States will pay about one-tenth of the previous level, or the amount that matches China's contributions.

The alleged delay came at a crucial time in January, as the virus was spreading around the world undetected and China was stockpiling medical equipment and protective gear made in the US and elsewhere.

Trump suspended U.S. contributions to the WHO on April 14, accusing it of promoting China's "disinformation" about the coronavirus outbreak and saying his administration would launch a review of the organization. This means that if China will contribute $40 million, the same amount will be given by the US and no longer the $400 to $500 million anymore.

The president's decision was criticised by global leaders and at home.

"That is why the USA has made a decision to continue to partner with the World Health Organization", the letter continued. "China owes a massive debt to the entire world, and it can start with paying its fair share to the WHO".
