Trump's 200 ventilators ‘donated’ to India cost $2.6 million”

Underlining the close partnership between the two countries, President Donald Trump, on May 16, announced that the United States would donate ventilators to India.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said in times of global health crisis caused by the COVID-19 outbreak, it is important for nations to work together and do as much as possible to make the world healthier and free of it.

As the coronavirus caseload in India was inching toward 85,000, US President Donald Trump extended a helping hand and announced that Washington would donate ventilators to New Delhi. Speaking at the White House news conference held at the Rose Garden, the President urged citizens to return to normal life.

"India has been so great and as you know your Prime Minister has been a very good friend of mine", Trump said and later on Twitter announced to donate ventilators to India.

"We are working closely with India", he told reporters. "We have a tremendous supply of ventilators". "Together we will beat the invisible enemy", Trump had tweeted. I spoke to Prime Minister (Narendra) Modi and we are sending quite a few ventilators to India.

The president is scheduled to spend his weekend at Camp David for a number of meetings. Your Prime Minister has been a very good friend of mine.

"I just got back, a short while ago, from India recently", he said.

In the earlier tweet, he also wrote: "We're also cooperating on vaccine development".

"I think it's possible you could see a vaccine in people's arms next year, by the middle or end of next year". Despite trade tensions between the two countries, Trump heaped praise on Modi as an "exceptional leader, a great champion of India" in his speech in Gujarat.

"More power to Indian-American friendship!"

In its measure to help India fight against the soaring Covid-19 cases, the United States will airlift 200 mobile ventilators, each estimated to cost about Rs 1 million.

He said, "By this morning, nearly every state has started taking steps for reopening and the countrymen are doing excellent work with constant care and they want life to be normalized as before".
