US Commerce Department tightens screws on Huawei export controls”

Under the new rules, foreign semiconductor makers must obtain a license from U.S. officials in order to ship to Huawei-designed semiconductors to the Chinese company that were produced using USA technology.

On Friday, the Trump administration said it would amend an export rule to block shipments of semiconductors that are the "direct product of certain USA software and technology", Reuters reported. America sees its intellectual property dominance as a key tool in challenging China's rise.

Beijing has urged the United States to draw a line under what it calls the "unreasonable suppression of Huawei and Chinese enterprises" following Washington's announcement of new export controls to restrict the tech giant's access to American semiconductor technology. The foreign ministry told that it would "firmly defend its companies' legal rights" in response to a question about possible retaliation in response to the U.S.

Huawei is at the center of a broad struggle for technological dominance between the USA and China.

Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross accused Huawei of continuing "to use US software and technology to design semiconductors, undermining the national security and foreign policy purposes of the Entity List". But China's official Global Times newspaper threatened countermeasures on Friday.

Additionally, China can suspend its purchases of Boeing aircraft, which could be a huge blow to the aerospace firm as it faces massive losses over the coronavirus crisis.
