Coronavirus: Ireland records lowest number of deaths since 27 March”

There have been three further Covid-19-linked deaths in Northern Ireland, new Department of Health figures have revealed.

It brings the total number of virus related deaths here 1,547.

They've said they are working to resolve the issue as soon as possible.

Of those for whom transmission status is known community transmission accounts for 60%, close contact accounts for 37% and travel overseas is 3%.

Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan said: "On the first day of Ireland moving into phase one of re-opening we have experienced the lowest number of deaths since March 27th".

"Just because somewhere is open doesn't mean we need to go", he said.

Mr Harris told RTE radio: "I'm pleased that we have gotten to this point because of the incredible efforts of the Irish people to suppress this virus".

First Minister Foster said these "hard won freedoms" had been allowed because the vast majority had been faithfully following the public health advice self-isolation, on shielding, on social distancing and on limiting their activities in public and washing their hands thoroughly. "I would urge anyone who can, to take advantage of this in order to improve mental health and wellbeing".

At the moment, care home staff and their relatives in Northern Ireland can be tested if they have Covid-19 symptoms.

Starting south today with the first phase of the Government's five-phase abolition plan, the Minister for Health said the release of some of the restrictions was "sensible for all".

Auto and bike fix shops have also re-opening, alongside IT and phone shops, office suppliers, electrical stores and a number of others.

Optometrists and hearing aid testing service have also been given the green light.

Photographs of long queues at reopened hardware stores in Dublin were shared on social media, but these were mainly to comply with in-store distancing requirements.

Meanwhile the total death toll in the United Kingdom stands at 34,796 - still the highest in Europe.

At least 2,025 people have died in Ireland since the outbreak, 1,543 people south of the border and 482 north of it.

There were 54 Covid-19 patients in ICU on Sunday, down by 67% from the peak in mid-April when around 160 people were receiving intensive care treatment.

In Wales a further four people died, and there were two further deaths in Scotland.
