Coronavirus: Trump gives World Health Organization ultimatum over Covid-19 handling”

Critics say Trump, who had earlier praised China's response, is trying to divert attention from his handling of the pandemic in the United States, which has suffered by far the highest death toll.

In his letter dated May 18, Trump alleged that the World Health Organization has failed to publicly call on China to allow for an independent investigation into the origins of the virus, despite the recent endorsement for doing so by its own Emergency Committee.

Critics have accused President Trump of attempting to divert attention for his own handling of the virus, as the United States comes to terms with the highest number of cases in the world.

The WHO, which is part of the United Nations, has faced increasingly intense criticism for its closeness with the communist regime ruling China, where the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) virus broke out previous year.

The threat comes at a time when the covid-19 pandemic has killed more than 90,000 Americans and more than 318,000 people worldwide.

Washington suspended funding to the World Health Organization in mid-April, accusing it of being too close to Beijing and covering up and mismanaging the coronavirus pandemic.

Internal documents and video footage obtained by The Epoch Times shows Chinese official consistently manipulated data on the true extent of the outbreak and hid crucial details about the virus's transmissability and origins.

World Health Organization director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus meanwhile reiterated to the assembly that his organisation had "sounded the alarm early, and we sounded it often".

Tedros said that every country and group "must examine its response and learn from its experience".

In its first report on the handling of the pandemic, the seven-member oversight committee said the World Health Organization had "demonstrated leadership and made important progress in its COVID-19 response".

The probe will encompass "the entirety of the response by all actors, in good faith", he added. "The only way forward for the World Health Organization is if it can actually demonstrate independence from China". In the following weeks, World Health Organization warned countries there was a narrowing "window of opportunity" to prevent the virus from spreading globally.

U.S. National Security Council spokesman John Ullyot characterized China's newly announced contribution as "a token to distract from calls from a growing number of nations demanding accountability for the Chinese government's failure to meet its obligations". But the review panel, echoing comments from many countries, said such a review during the "heat of the response" could hurt the WHO's ability to respond to it.

It also said "an imperfect and evolving understanding" was not unusual when a new disease emerged and, in an apparent rejoinder to Trump, said a "rising politicization of pandemic response" was hindering the effort to defeat the virus.

Chinese President Xi Jinping voiced support for a joint approach, vowing in his address to make any vaccine his country developed available for all and offered $2 billion in aid.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said Monday many governments had ignored World Health Organization recommendations.

Guterres said lessons learned from COVID-19 would be essential for tackling future crises but called for an immediate focus on unity to get through the present emergency.
