Gov. Gavin Newsom changes rules for reopening, again

Gov. Gavin Newsom changes rules for reopening, again”

California on Monday relaxed its rules for counties to reopen during the coronavirus pandemic.

The NBA, NHL, MLB and other sports franchises suspended their seasons in mid-March as coronavirus deaths began to climb in the U.S. Leagues and local leaders would specifically have to make "deep stipulations" to protect not only the players, but their support systems as well.

"Sporting events, pro sports in that first week or so of June without spectators and modifications and very prescriptive conditions also can begin to move forward ... if we hold these trend lines in the next number of weeks", Newsom said during a press conference on Monday.

The updated criteria states counties must show their hospitalization and intensive care unit (ICU) rates remain stable and the number of COVID-19 patients has not increased by more than 5% over the past seven days on average.

Even though the state is loosening reopening requirements, counties are able to keep their current local stay-at-home guidelines.

The new criteria requires that counties must have no more than 25 cases per 100,000 residents or no higher than an 8 percent positive rate among people testing for the coronavirus.

Twenty-four counties in mostly rural Northern California had already won approval under the old guidance. He also said the state has conducted over a million tests, and bolstered its tracing capacity in recent weeks.

Excluding Los Angeles and Sacramento counties, most of the state has chosen to enter into a Stage 2 reopening, which allows places such as book, clothing, toy and sporting goods stores, as well as music shops and florists to deliver to customers at the curb.

As of Monday, California has confirmed almost 80,000 cases of the novel coronavirus with some 3,261 deaths.
