Gretchen Whitmer Will Let Some Retail Businesses Reopen Friday in MI”

On Monday, May 18th, Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed an executive order allowing some business re-openings in the Michigan Economic Recovery Council regions 6 and 8, also known as the Upper Peninsula and the Traverse City area, starting on Friday, May 22nd. "It's crucial that all businesses do everything in their power to protect their workers, customers, and their families".

"The data shows that these regions in Michigan are seeing consistent encouraging trends when it comes to the number of cases, deaths, and the percent of tests that are positive for COVID-19", Dr. Joneigh Khaldun, Chief Deputy Director for Health for the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, said in a separate statement. And as we approach Memorial Day weekend, I encourage everyone to be smart and be safe.

All businesses that will reopen must adopt the safety measures outlined in the Executive Order 2020-91. The recommended social distancing practices, such as maintaining six feet of separation between strangers, must be maintained.

She announced an order on Monday that requires employers to offer protections against coronavirus for all of their workers, customers and communities before resuming in-person work.

"I think it will be a tough road back for numerous businesses, because people may be nervous about venturing out, but I believe there will be people who will be excited to return to work and start being to serve their patrons in the safest manner possible", he said.

"We're grateful to Gov. Whitmer for taking action today to save lives and hold down the spread of this bad virus", said Ron Bieber, President of the Michigan AFL-CIO. Campgrounds and lodging will not be reopening at this time. "I will continue to work around the clock with LEO Director Donofrio and my partners in health care, business, and labor to ensure protections for every MI worker". "While many hardworking Michiganders and small business owners would have welcomed this development weeks ago, it's better late than never".

"Because every worker in every industry across this state is impacted by the threat of this virus, we must work with our businesses to educate them on their responsibilities and then we must be diligent in ensuring that they abide by them", she said.

Governor Whitmer says the main reason for the partial reopening is because these regions have not seen as many coronavirus cases and are safe to being reengaging.
