Indiana Reports First Case of Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children”

Doctors encountering children who may have symptoms of a severe immune disorder purportedly linked to Covid-19 should report the cases to KK Women's and Children's Hospital (KKH) and the National University Hospital (NUH).

Dr Swaminathan said: "Very recently there have been some reports of children getting admitted with a unusual syndrome, something that looks like sepsis, something that looks like a disease called Kawasaki disease, which causes inflammation in the blood vessels. This allows us to receive these reports from clinicians and public health professionals and allow them to gather more information and better understand this condition and how we can manage it".

Meanwhile, WHO director-general Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said reports from Europe and North America have described a small number of children being admitted to intensive care units with a multisystem inflammatory condition with some features similar to those of Kawasaki disease and toxic shock syndrome.

Also known as pediatric multisystem inflammatory syndrome, or PMIS, it is a rare, potentially deadly syndrome that has appeared in hundreds of children across the country who have been diagnosed with the novel coronavirus.

MOH said that as of last Thursday, all children in public hospitals in Singapore who have tested positive for coronavirus had either mild or no symptoms of Covid-19.

"It's very important we pursue it, it's very important we understand it but it's very important that parents and children understand this does not reflect a fundamental change in the way the disease presents in children". The syndrome appears to be related to post-infection inflammation of the body's blood vessels, including those in the heart, according to officials.

"We do think this is a new condition distinct from Kawasaki disease", she added.

Last week doctors in northern Italy reported a 30-fold increase in cases of the Kawasaki-like disease in one of the regions that was worst hit by Covid-19.

KCCI Radio first reported that the Polk County Pediatric Medical Collaborative was informed Friday afternoon of the first pediatric patient, who lived in Eastern Iowa.

According to the official World Health Organization website, case reports and small series have described a presentation of acute illness accompanied by a hyperinflammatory syndrome, leading to multiorgan failure and shock.

Box said she and other state officials would work with the state's department of education in coming days to determine when to open schools and how to ensure the health of students.
