Trump threatens permanent freeze on WHO funding in 30 days”

Chinese President Xi Jinping painted his country as a global leader at the World Health Organization's annual meeting Monday, calling for worldwide cooperation against the new coronavirus, pledging $2 billion toward this end, and promising to make any Chinese vaccine "a global public good" when available. "Over 100 countries, including India, had pushed for a probe into virus" origin.

Without directly referring to USA criticism, Chinese president Xi Jinping said that China has "acted with openness, transparency and responsibility", while providing information to the World Health Organization "in a most timely fashion".

In April, Trump said the World Health Organization was China-centric and temporarily cut funding with a review pending.

Newsweek reported Tuesday that the Central Intelligence Agency believes China attempted to pressure the WHO against announcing a public health emergency in January, citing a report corroborated by two senior US intelligence officials.

'The risk remains high and we have a long road to travel, ' Tedros added, saying preliminary tests in some countries showed that at most 20% of populations had contracted the disease but most places that less than 10 per cent. "So, I will initiate an independent evaluation at the earliest appropriate moment", he said.

"This work needs a scientific and professional attitude, and needs to be led by the WHO". Trump has questioned the value of the U.S. funding sent to the United Nations, has withdrawn from global climate agreements and lambasted the World Trade Organization - claiming all were ripping off the United States. "The people of Taiwan abhor the two-faced behavior of the Chinese government, which claims to care for their health and welfare while actually seeking to deprive them of their right to health at every turn".

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus acknowledged there had been shortcomings and told the virtual assembly he welcomed calls for a review.

"China supports the idea of a comprehensive review of the global response to COVID-19 after it is brought under control to sum up experience and address deficiencies", said Xi. "They (WHO) are a puppet of China".

US President Donald Trump has branded the global body a "puppet of China".

During his opening speech at the 73rd session of the WHA on Monday (May 18), Chinese Chairman Xi Jinping (習近平) praised WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus for his contribution to helping stem the spread of the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19).

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres opened the event, criticizing nations who had ignored the WHO's recommendations.

"I am convinced that we will be able to overcome this pandemic when we work together, and that will help us to achieve this more rapidly", she added.

Across Europe, world leaders and health ministers used their messages to back an investigation, but also to reiterate their support for the World Health Organization and its importance, as well as the need for a united and collective global response.

World Health Organization and most experts say the virus is believed to have emerged in a market selling wildlife in the central city of Wuhan late previous year.

China will also make any COVID-19 vaccines that it develops freely available, Xi said.

"Deadly global threats require a new unity and solidarity", he said.
