BC health officials report two new coronavirus cases, three deaths”

Forty-nine health centres across every health authority have begun performing elective surgeries.

Bonnie Henry announced Tuesday that there have been 2,446 confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus to date, including 146 people who have died.

No new outbreaks have been seen in B.C. since Monday, but 14 outbreaks continue to be seen at long term care or assisted living facilities in the province. 12 of those cases are in intensive care or critical care. There are now 14 active outbreaks in long-term care and five in acute care units in hospitals.

There has been one new acute-care outbreak at the Abbotsford Regional Hospital.

Today is the first day that many businesses in B.C. can reopen and Henry is assuring people the province would not be allowing many businesses to do so if officials did not think they could do so safely.

The number of long-term care homes in the province with a patient or member of staff who has tested positive is at 21.

Broken down by health region, Henry said there are 883 cases in Vancouver Coastal Health, 1,196 in Fraser Health, 126 on Vancouver Island, 181 in Interior Health, and 60 in Northern Health. Businesses are required to have what Henry called "accommodations" for any concerns that workers might have about safety upon their return. "Having said that, there are abilities for Environmental Health Officers to shut down a business if they feel that there are health hazards that put the public at risk".

Henry said that there would be an inspection process to ensure guidelines are being followed. "All of you made a difference".

"Once again, we are still learning new ways of safe social interactions and doing things that we've never had to do".
