Coronavirus: Trump says he is taking unproven drug hydroxychloroquine”

"I'm not but I would never begrudge any American taking the advice of their physician", he told Fox News' Kristin Fisher.

The US president, who has touted the anti-malarial drug as a possible coronavirus treatment, said he had been taking a pill daily for around 10 days and discussed it with the White House doctor before doing so. So just in case you may be feeling some FOMO, we took a closer look at the now much-talked-about drug. I said what do you think?

The president said he was taking "the zinc and the hydroxy" and "so far I seem to be okay". "I'm taking it. Hydroxychloroquine".

The President said he had started taking it "a couple of weeks ago" because "I've heard a lot of good stories".

The FDA issued a warning last month that hydroxychloroquine should not be taken outside of a hospital or clinical trial because of the risk of severe heart problems.

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, responding to news about Trump's use of hydroxychloroquine during an interview on CNN with host Anderson Cooper on Monday evening, made it clear that she did not approve of the president using the drug. It was her note about the president's weight, however, that really caught people's attention.

"My physician has not recommended that but I wouldn't hesitate to take the counsel of my doctor, any American should do likewise", he added.

The White House physician, Dr Sean Conley, said in a statement released through the press office that, after "numerous discussions" with Trump about the evidence for and against using hydroxychloroquine, "we concluded the potential benefit from treatment outweighed the relative risks".

Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar and Veteran Affairs Secretary Robert Wilkie also defended the commander-in-chief during Tuesday's cabinet meeting as the "right to try president" and said the drug had been used to safely treat other diseases for decades.

The UK government has been stockpiling some medicines that might be useful against coronavirus.

At his last full checkup in February 2019 he passed the official threshold for being considered obese, with a Body Mass Index of 30.4.

"He forgets that he's president and that what he does and says, people listen to and model themselves on that", said Lawrence Gostin, a public health expert at Georgetown University.

Senate Democratic Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called Mr Trump's decision "reckless" but added: "Who knows if it's true?"

California Rep. Maxine Waters: "Trump says he's been taking #Hydroxychloroquine for nearly 2 [weeks]".

Mr Trump was apparently referring to a preliminary study from April of Covid-19 patients in USA government-run hospitals for military veterans that suggested hydroxychloroquine had no benefit and may have even caused a greater rate of deaths.
