EasyJet hit by 'highly sophisticated' cyber attack”

British low-priced airline EasyJet today admitted that the company has fallen victim to a cyber-attack, which it labeled "highly sophisticated", exposing email addresses and travel details of around 9 million of its customers.

For those who have had their credit card details accessed, action has already been taken to contact all of these people, and they have been offered support, said the company. The Asian airline said hackers had accessed personal information of 9.4 million customers.

easyJet is also urging customers to be alert, especially if they received any communication they weren't expecting.

The airline did not disclose when the cyber attack took place.

"EasyJet customers are now at greater risk of phishing scams following this cyberattack, and people need to be wary of emails they receive purporting to come from the airline company".

The sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the same group of hackers had previously targeted travel records and other data to track the movement of specific individuals, as opposed to stealing credit card details for financial gain.

EasyJet said it is working with the National Cyber Security Centre and the Information Commissioner's Office, which is the United Kingdom data regulator.

He said criminals would be likely to target EasyJet customers with fake refund emails in a bid to secure personal details which could be used for identity theft.

easyJet is not the first airline to be hit with a cyber-attack.

She told the Telegraph: "I have tweeted about this incident several times, and easyJet has not responded once". As well as contending with the fallout from the coronavirus crisis, the airline is also dealing with internal issues as threats from founder and major shareholder Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou continues his assault on the controversial Airbus order.

EasyJet did not immediately give details of how the breach occurred, but said it had "closed off this unauthorised access" and reported the incident to the authorities.

Haji-Ioannou is looking to oust the chairman, chief executive and finance boss. Let us know in the comments.
