'Jane Roe' Norma McCorvey: I Was Paid for Pro-Life Switch

'Jane Roe' Norma McCorvey: I Was Paid for Pro-Life Switch”

In AKA Jane Roe, the FX documentary that takes a deeper look at McCorvey's life, a huge revelation is made in the final 20 minutes of the film: her renunciation of the pro-choice movement was entirely fabricated.

She was pregnant with her third child in 1970 when she was referred to two lawyers who wanted to challenge laws in Texas banning abortions except where the mother's life was at risk. "I was the big fish", she admitted. "I think it was a mutual thing", she explained. "I took their money and they'd put me out in front of the cameras and tell me what to say".

Reverend Rob Schenck, a leader of the evangelical Christian right, was also interviewed for the documentary, and told filmmakers, "I had never heard her say anything like this..." It was all an act. "I'm a good actress", she points out. The Supreme Court case was passed in 1973, legalizing abortions in all 50 states. McCorvey served as the plaintiff.

I'd recommend just listening to the latest episode of Rewire.News' podcast about Roe v. Wade; they did a special news episode about this very issue since Imani Gandy and Jessica Mason Pieklo have been excellent about coverage about abortion rights issues. "AKA Jane Roe" explores how McCorvey was brought into the anti-abortion movement, as well as her relationship with pro-choice organizations and her experience remaining anonymous during the Supreme Court case.

"If a young woman wants to have an abortion, that's no skin off my a**. That's why they call it choice", she added.

But it was all a lie, McCorvey says in a documentary filmed in the months before her death in 2017, claiming she only did it because she was paid by antiabortion groups including Operation Rescue.

The documentary feature follows the true story of McCorvey in the landmark ruling on abortion rights.

In 1995, she was working at a Dallas abortion clinic that was targeted for demonstrations by Operation Rescue, a militant organization known for extreme tactics such as blockading clinics (the group is now known as Operation Save America).

The woman behind the 1973 ruling legalising abortion in the USA is seen admitting in a new documentary that her stunning change of heart on the issue in later life was "all an act". But I knew what we were doing.

"Whenever we were together, Norma was determined to film all the time and whenever I was not there, she would want to know when I was coming back to film", he continued. This included forcing her to break up with her long time girlfriend.
