In February, the adjudicatory chamber of UEFA's Club Financial Control Body found City had committed "serious breaches" of the financial fair play regulations put in place by European football's governing body. They showed that City overstated sponsorship revenue and masked the source of revenue from deals to tied to the club's owners in Abu Dhabi.

The Champions League is set to return from 8 August in an "Express" format in order to finish the competition which is now suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic. City continued to play in this season's Champions League after the ban for two future seasons was announced.

The Etihad side have never won the Champions League, but had defeated Real Madrid 2-1 away in the first leg of their last 16 tie, before the 2019/20 competition was indefinitely suspended. The return game has been postponed since March and is not due to be played until August.

While UEFA are studying how to end the most important club competition in Europe, which will predictably start in August.

If a ban by UEFA is upheld, the fifth-place team is likely to take City's place in the next Champions League.
