Michigan dams breached, thousands evacuated amid flooding

Michigan dams breached, thousands evacuated amid flooding”

An emergency declaration has been ordered following the collapse of the Edenville Dam, which prompted the evacuation of residents living in the area and caused flooding throughout the northern mid-Michigan community.

Whitmer, who has been criticized for her strict lockdown orders during the COVID-19 crisis, added, "To go through this in the midst of a global pandemic is nearly unthinkable".

According to Michigan Advance, Whitmer "asks everyone going to shelters to wear their masks and maintain social distancing as best they can".

Both the Sanford and Edenville dams were breached. Officials are in the process of evacuating Tittabawassee Township, Thomas Township, and Saginaw Township.

Shelters were set up in and around Midland County.

A flood warning remains in effect for the Tittabawassee, from Midland downstream to Saginaw, and the forecast does not show relief for Midland.

Life-threatening flash flooding is moving through the area from the dam failures. People down stream of the Sanford Dam are told to seek higher ground immediately because the impact of the situation could be deadly. Also, do not attempt to drive across flooded roadways.

The depth and destruction as a result of the breaches and flooding are unknown at this time, according to Whitmer.

Earlier, state officials had been reportedly eyeing Sanford Dam, south of Edenville, in anticipation of another rupture.

The evacuations in MI followed days of heavy rains in parts of the Midwest that also brought flooding to Chicago and other parts of Illinois, Ohio and other states.

Just after 8:30 p.m., county dispatch said that failure of the Sanford Dam is imminent.

Measures were taken on Monday to alert state residents of the heavy rains.

The heaviest rain over the next several days will be from the Ohio Valley into the western Carolinas where some areas could see close to a half a foot of rain as significant flooding is forecast there. The county is working with the hydroelectric power plant Boyce Hydro to assess the dams.
