Mike Pence calls USA astronauts 'trailblazers' ahead of launch next week”

Crew Dragon is created to carry seven passengers but will only carry a max of four astronauts while flying NASA missions.

NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley will spend 30 to 119 days on the International Space Station as part of what SpaceX is calling its Demo-2 mission. The historic launch pad has witnessed the Apollo and space shuttle missions.

This will be the first crewed launch of the Commercial Crew Program (CCP) with SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket and Crew Dragon Capsule. The capsule also features a sci-fi futuristic look with new control panels that will be exclusively touch screen. Click on their names for their full bio. In preparation for the launch, the two astronauts entered a strict medical quarantine last week at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, and plan to fly to the Kennedy Space Center next Wednesday for final preparations and a dress-rehearsal of the launch. Once the mission is completed NASA's CCP will be able to officially certify SpaceX's crew transportation system. This will open the door for longer duration missions to the ISS, the Moon, and eventually to Mars. The first ever. A feat that has been at the forefront of the efforts of SpaceX and its mercurial CEO Elon Musk since its founding in 2002. SpaceX had planned on launching another batch of Starlink satellites this week, but due to Tropical Storm Arthur's appearance chose to postpone that launch and focus on the Demo-2 mission.

The liftoff is booked for May 27, at 1:33 PM PT/4:33 PM ET. Additionally, the government agency will provide funding and expertise but huge companies have designed the spacecraft that they own and operate in its place and the space station will buy the seat as a customer does.
