Relaunch in Calgary, Brooks depends on COVID-19 numbers this week

Relaunch in Calgary, Brooks depends on COVID-19 numbers this week”

With the daily number of COVID-19 cases down over the past few days, Hinshaw will no longer hold daily news conferences to update the numbers. "We have not seen any increase so far in numbers in Calgary and Brooks, and overall, as I mentioned, our cases are stable", Hinshaw said. "It's essential that we ensure these facilities have the tools and the resources that they need to protect the residents and their staff". The total number of recoveries rose by 66 on Monday, meaning 5,510 Albertans and 196 Northern Alberta residents have recovered from COVID-19.

Pon added that this funding is an element of the province's relaunch plan, and will be available until public health orders are rescinded across Alberta.

Health Minister Tyler Shandro announced Tuesday that the government will dole out $170 million per year to long-term care homes, supportive-living facilities and seniors lodges.

The money will be used for staffing, cleaning supplies and lost revenue as result of the virus.

The chief medical officer of health had no deaths to announce on Tuesday.

The funding comes as one new COVID-19 case has been found at the McKenzie Towne Continuing Care Centre, where officials had hoped a deadly outbreak was winding down. In that group, there were 75 positive results.

"There were only 48 positive results in the remaining 3,000 people tested, showing that the likelihood of infection is much greater when there is a known exposure", she said.

Alberta Premier Jason Kenney says Calgary and the city of Brooks will get a lot more advance notice this time around on opening up their economies during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hinshaw announced on May 15 that she would begin scaling back on the in-person updates she provides.

The Alberta government also posted new data Tuesday illustrating the cost of Sweden's decisions. She said there are 61 Albertans now in hospital, eight of whom are in the ICU.
