Tom Hanks' 'Greyhound' Will Premiere on Apple TV+

Tom Hanks' 'Greyhound' Will Premiere on Apple TV+”

Since the coronavirus lockdown started, streaming services such as Netflix, Disney+ and HBO Now saw an expected rise in subscribers, between 47% and a staggering 300% increase.

Bloomberg [paywall] brings word of the evolving strategy at Apple TV+, which launched in November a year ago with the sole target of original series, movies, and documentaries. The much-delayed Sony drama - originally set to open in theaters in March 2019, before getting pushed to January 2019, then to May 8, 2020 and finally to June 12, 2020 - will now forego theaters entirely and steer right to streaming waters, making its premiere on Apple TV+ as the platform's biggest feature film debut yet. Apple TV+ also has a limited app offering, with nothing for Android / Android TV, Windows 10, and gaming consoles. While Greyhound is definitely a large purchase, compared to Apple's tech purchases and other various deals, its price amounts to pocket change. Expect Apple to play more the same slow but steady offense in the content wars.

The pandemic is also the reason behind the news of the acquisition of Hanks' Greyhound, first reported by Deadline.

Hanks both stars in and wrote the film. "Greyhound" is set in the early days of World War II as an worldwide convoy of 37 Allied ships, led by Hanks' Capt. Ernest Krause, crosses the treacherous North Atlantic while being hotly pursued by wolf packs of Nazi submarines.

Apple buys older shows for TV+, stepping up fight with Netflix

"Greyhound" joins a growing list of movies that were originally slated for theatrical release, but then opted for a digital debut after the coronavirus pandemic resulted in most US movie theaters remaining closed until July at the earliest. Krause struggles with self-doubt and personal demons while commanding his ship and its crew battling the enemy.

The Apple TV+ catalogue could soon become a lot richer, according to a new Bloombergreport, which states the Cupertino giant is looking to acquire older movies and TV shows to complement its original programming.

Apple executives are said to have begun taking pitches from Hollywood studios about licensing content for Apple TV+.
