United States border closure extended 30 more days, Trudeau says

United States border closure extended 30 more days, Trudeau says”

A ban on nonessential travel between the United States and Canada has been extended for another 30 days and the border will now remain closed until at least June 21.

As Canada and the USA extend COVID-19 border restrictions, a labour and employment expert says it will take comprehensive testing and contact tracing to get the world's largest unprotected border open again. The US-Canada border has been closed since March 21.

Additionally, Trudeau announced the expansion of the eligibility of the Canada Emergency Business Account (CEBA) to include many owner-operated small businesses.

When asked how much longer the border will remain closed, Trudeau said decisions will be made on a week-by-week basis as the pandemic continues to evolve.

"This is an important decision that will keep people in both of our countries safe", Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Tuesday, per Reuters.

"I always say we love our American neighbors to the south, but right now we're going to have to keep the borders closed, especially just for visits and that", he said at a press conference on Friday, "We just can't risk it". "That'll go over easily".

The latest measures will last through June 21. Many Canadians fear a reopening. Now the US, which is suffering the world's largest outbreak, outpaces its northern neighbor in number of confirmed cases of the coronavirus - roughly 1.5 million to 80,000, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.

Dr. Theresa Tam, Canada's chief public health officer, said the only thing that's allowed Canada to manage this first wave is the fact that worldwide travelers have been banned and that returning Canadians and Canadian residents have quarantined for two weeks.

Asked when Canada could reopen to worldwide visitors, Trudeau said the government was making decisions week to week based on a changing situation.

Cross-border commutes by Canadian health care workers and others in essential jobs have not been impacted, the New York Times reports. Truck drivers are critical as they move food and medical goods in both directions.

The U.S. and Canada have extended an order closing their shared border to nonessential traffic.

Windsor is less than five miles from Detroit, Michigan, and is the busiest border crossing between the United States and Canada in terms of traffic and commercial goods.

Thousands of miles to the south, construction of President Donald Trump's signature border wall remains ongoing.

"What we don't want to do is try to open up parts of our economy and have a lot of folks coming across the border that we haven't seen in the past 50 or 60 days", he told a U.S. Chamber of Commerce event.

"These are ongoing questions", Trudeau said.
