Windows Terminal 1.0 is here with numerous improvements

Windows Terminal 1.0 is here with numerous improvements”

But there's more coming to Windows 10 users on the Linux front, and more information in this regard was shared today at the Build developer conference.

Users prepared to jump through a few hoops have been able to coax WSL into displaying graphical Linux apps for some time.

Windows Terminal even allows you to customize the look and feel of each profile (Command Prompt, PowerShell, Windows Subsystem for Linux or SSH).

You can now run all your favorite Linux IDEs or other GUI applications on Windows 10 seamlessly.

While the idea of streaming a web app isn't revolutionary in itself, Microsoft hopes that Project Reunion makes it easier to move older apps onto the cloud-based model rather than have to rewrite them specifically to run on Azure, Microsoft's cloud-based computing solution. Given Microsoft's dire lack of tablet-friendly Windows 10 apps - something that really hurt the Surface Go 2 - a concerted push to modernize software would be useful for consumers and developers alike. Back in 2018, open-source startup Whitewater Foundry released a distro preconfigured for graphical shenanigans in the form of Debian-based WLinux, which required the addition of a Windows X server to make the magic happen. But it involved poor graphics performance and some technical configuration that didn't integrate well with the Linux system.

While this year, BUILD is effectively stage-less due to COVID-19 circumstances, Microsoft executives are on a virtual stage discussing Project Reunion, aimed at reducing the fragmentation between Windows API and Universal Windows Platforms. Wayland communicates with a Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) client on the Windows host to run the GUI app. For example, you can open Command Prompt in one tab, PowerShell in another, and WSL bash shell in the third tab. In essence, Project Reunion will provide developers with a single backward-compatible platform for both legacy code and whatever Microsoft comes up with in the future.

The arrival of GPU acceleration for WSL2 will indeed remove a few roadblocks for users, particularly those wishing to experiment on-premises ahead of a transition to dedicated Linux machinery or a full-on Hyper-V session. By letting go of the reins a bit, the company is aiming to spark more developer interest in Fluid Framework.

Support for GPU hardware acceleration will arrive in the upcoming months for Windows 10 Insiders in the Fast Ring for initial testing.

First of all, it's the Linux GUI apps that are making their debut into the world of Windows 10.

If you want to be an early adopter and try the latest WSL features, you can join the Windows Insiders Fast Ring to receive all the latest changes to WSL.
