South Korean football club fined $130,000 over sex dolls scandal

South Korean football club fined $130,000 over sex dolls scandal”

The league said FC Seoul had plenty of time from the noon placement of the dolls until the evening kickoff to correct the error.

The South Korean soccer team who filled its fan-less stadium with sex dolls was reportedly slapped with a record fine by the league for the "mix-up".

"The disciplinary committee made a decision to take heavy disciplinary action considering the graveness of the incident. that has greatly insulted and hurt female and family fans and to prevent similar incidents going forward", the K League said in a statement.

Earlier this month the K-League became the world's first major football league to start playing after South Korea succeeded in containing the virus.

The dolls were spotted by social media users and the team issued an apology after their 1-0 win against Gwangju FC.

The club expressed its "sincere remorse" as public backlash intensified, but said they were assured by a supplier that they were using mannequins - not sex dolls - to mimic a home crowd. It's the most the K League has ever fined a team.

Though the incident was not intended, it was possible to distinguish the dolls from ordinary mannequins.

However the seemingly innocent idea of putting dolls in the stands turned into a huge scandal after attentive fans who watched the match on TV noticed that one of the banners showed the name of an adult toy manufacturer. The opening game attracted 19 million viewers worldwide.

There could be worse to follow for FC Seoul, the 2016 league champion.

The Kukmin Ilbo newspaper said Seoul Facilities Corporation, which operates Seoul World Cup Stadium, is investigating the incident for a lease violation. By not doing so, it could be expelled from the stadium where it has been based since 2004. "We're genuinely sorry to our fans about the installation of the mannequins at our game on May 17", the club wrote in a message posted on Instagram.

"We apologize deeply to all those concerned about the unfortunate situation that occurred", stated FC Seoul, which also has disciplined some of its employees for their roles in the matter. "We will think hard about what we need to do to ensure that something like this never happens again".
