Canadians asked to wear non-medical face masks to protect others

Canadians asked to wear non-medical face masks to protect others”

"In order for people to get around freely and start getting back to normal life, we have to improve our ability to quickly pinpoint the virus and to isolate it", Trudeau said.

Tam said the new guideline comes as provinces begin to allow businesses and services to reopen, bringing more people out of their homes. That understanding has changed, as it is now known people without symptoms can transmit the virus to others.

Tam said the advice coming from her office today is a "specific recommendation", while the previous language was "more permissive". She did not suggest she regrets recommending against using face masks earlier.

Canada is not making masks mandatory, said Tam, though local health officials can do so if they believe it warranted, particularly in places where community transmission of the virus is continuing.

"I will certainly be wearing a mask if I can't physically distance, and I encourage all other British Columbians to do the same thing", said Horgan in his daily briefing.

Trudeau's face mask was on his desk beside him in the chamber.

She said if someone who has asthma wear a mask, their breathing may be inhibited, they may feel shortness of breath and they may feel claustrophobic.

Several countries, including Spain, have made wearing masks compulsory in cases where the two-metre physical distancing rule can't be observed.

She stressed that a face mask is not to replace other measures like physical distancing, handwashing and staying out of public places when you can.

"In addition, where COVID-19 activity is occurring, use of non-medical masks or face coverings is recommended as an added layer of protection when physical distancing is hard to maintain".

Trudeau said again that the best measures to limit the spread of COVID-19 are to stay two metres apart, to stay at home whenever possible and to wash hands regularly and frequently.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the federal government will fund provinces' efforts to test people for COVID-19, track the contacts of those who test positive, and help different jurisdictions share data.

As authorities prepare for a possible new surge of COVID-19 infections in the fall, key to controlling future outbreaks will be individual actions that citizens take, including wearing a mask when physical distancing is not possible, Trudeau said.

Advocacy groups are asking people to be considerate of those who are not able to wear face coverings for various reasons amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

"The concept is one, I think, of reciprocal protection", Dr. Tam said.

Canada's chief public-health officer is officially recommending wearing non-medical masks in situations when keeping a distance of two metres might not be possible - a move supported by B.C.'s premier and provincial health officer on Wednesday.
