Chechen leader Kadyrov in hospital with suspected coronavirus”

"Ramzan Kadyrov has been brought to Moscow with suspected coronavirus infection [He] is know placed under medical observation", the source noted.

The head of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, is suspected of having the coronavirus. "Now he is under medical supervision", a medical source told state news agency Tass.

He was flown to Moscow on Wednesday for treatment after developing flu-like symptoms, said Interfax news agency quoting a source. "Now (he) is under medical supervision", state news agency TASS reported.

If the virus is confirmed, Mr Kadyrov would be the latest high-profile Russian official to contract the illness. He has no clear successor. At the same time, Yekaterinburg-based Znak wrote that the information department of the government of Chechnya refused to comment.

An aide to Mr Kadyrov, Grozny TV chief Akhmed Dudayev, said the Chechen leader was "in personal control of the work of the coronavirus headquarters", RIA Novosti reported.

Both father and son fought against Moscow during the first separatist conflict in Chechnya, from 1994 to 1996.

The Chechen leader has been strongly critical of medics in the republic who have complained of a lack of protective equipment.

He also likened Chechens who do not self-isolate and infect others to "terrorists" who should be buried in pits.

He also threatened a Russian journalist who reported that Chechens were battling the virus in their homes instead of seeking support from ill-equipped hospitals because they feared punitive reprisals from overbearing law enforcement.

Russian Federation has recorded a total of 317,554 coronavirus infections, the second-highest in the world after the United States, with 3,099 deaths nationwide.

Mainly Muslim Chechnya has recorded 1,026 cases and 11 deaths.

Kadyrov's official page on Russian social network Vkontakte has posted several updates in the past 24 hours, including posts on his charitable donations and birthday greetings for Russia's defense minister, but has not yet addressed his alleged infection.
