COVID-19 positive mink 'likely' to have infected Dutch farm worker

COVID-19 positive mink 'likely' to have infected Dutch farm worker”

Now with an animal- human transmission case plausible, authorities have increased measures to contain the virus from spreading including screening of all mink farms in the Netherlands, and mandatory protective clothing for all workers.

In a letter sent to parliament on Wednesday, agriculture minister Carola Schouten said the worker had a virus strain similar to that found in an animal on the premises, according to EuroNews.

By the end of April several minks at two mink farms in Gemert-Bakel and Laarbeek in the Dutch province of North Brabant appeared to be contaminated with COVID-19.

The Netherlands will start checking for the coronavirus on all mink farms in the country after research from an ongoing probe found a person likely caught it from an infected animal.

"These new research findings have a significant impact on the owners, families and employees of mink companies, as well as on local communities", Schouten said in the letter. The workers of the fur farm is not feared for their own health, as transmission of infection from animals to humans was considered impossible.

The Netherlands has made a decision to check all mink farms in the country for the coronavirus after recent research found an individual can probably catch the virus from infected minks.

Ms Schouten said it was too soon to consider culling the minks, whose soft fur is sold in China, Korea, Greece and Turkey. In 2016, the country had some 160 fur farms producing five million pelts a year.

The government also said it believes that cats may be playing a role in the spread of the virus between farms. Antibodies against COVID-19 have been detected on one farm in three of the 11 cats.

More than 44,249 cases of coronavirus have been confirmed in the Netherlands and more than 5700 people have died.
