LA County is aiming to reopen safely by July 4

LA County is aiming to reopen safely by July 4”

Los Angeles County's death toll from the coronavirus has passed 2,000 even as other figures pointed to progress in slowing the spread of the infection. Ninety-two percent of people who died had underlying health conditions.

Ferrer thinks that more asymptomatic people are getting tested and that is "driving down" the rate of positivity, simply because those who were being tested previously had to be ill, and therefore, had a higher chance of actually having COVID-19. The 3-day average for current hospitalizations per day is 1,532, a 15% decrease from the prior 3-day average. Testing capacity continues to increase in LA County, with testing results available for almost 380,000 individuals and 9% of people testing positive.

Solis mentioned the Cal State L.A. testing site that is run by OptumServe and has extended hours from 7 a.m.to 7 p.m., and said the county has the ability to test 20,000 people per day with 35 testing sites throughout the county. "This testing allows us to better understand how many people have been exposed to COVID-19 and how the virus is showing up in our communities".

In a presentation, Bill Allen, president of the Los Angeles Economic Development Corporation (LAEDC), confirmed there have been more than 1 million unemployment claims filed in L.A. County to date.

Ferrer said the county will release as soon as Wednesday results of the latest round of serology - or antibody - testing, which is done to estimate the actual spread of the virus in the county. Similar to the previous study, men were more likely than women to have been infected; 2.8% among men and 1.4% among women.

The case count is increasing, but the rate of positivity is slowly decreasing.

The date emerged during the second meeting of the county's Economic Resiliency Task Force, a collection of elected officials and business leaders assembled to recommend steps for creating jobs and returning the county to full employment. Beaches can reopen for active recreation including running, walking, swimming and surfing. While many outdoor spaces are open, public and private gatherings of any number of people outside of a single household unit are still not permitted. Everyone must continue to practice physical distancing of at least six feet apart and wear a clean cloth face covering that securely covers both your nose and mouth when around people outside of your household.

Previously, the City of Alhambra was only testing residents who were symptomatic and low-income; today it announced on Facebook that their testing has expanded to all Alhambra residents. July-yes, possibly. That's a goal, but we have to get there, and we have to do it by measurement, we have to do it with scientific evidence and data, and making sure that everybody's adhering to the public health order.

Dr. Christina Ghaly, director of health services for L.A. County, said a continuing downturn in the daily number of new confirmed cases suggested that the effective transmission number was now slightly under 1.

While the July date is a target, it will require continued trends toward containment of COVID-19.
