Pakistan International Airlines' Airbus A320 Crashes Near Karachi”

Flight PK803 took off from Lahore and was due to land at 2.30pm local time (7.30pm AEST) in Karachi but went missing from the radar, Pakistan Airlines spokesman Abdullah Khan told CNN.

Pictures and videos shared on social media show thick, black smoke engulfing the residential colony where the flight is said to have crashed.

An Airbus A320 carrying more than 100 passengers has crashed into a residential area near the southern Pakistani city of Karachi, the country's civil aviation agency says.

The state carrier said flight PK 8303 had crashed with 99 passengers and eight crew members on board, though civil aviation officials said the total for both may be 99. He said he expressed his deep sorrow and grief over the lives lost and directed all relevant departments to extend relief, rescue efforts and medical aid to injured.

PAKISTAN-AVIATION-ACCIDENT

Minister of Health and Population Welfare has declared emergency in all major hospitals of Karachi after the incident, Dawn news quoted Meeran Yousuf, the media coordinator to the Sindh health minister, as saying.

This breaking news story is being updated and more details will be published shortly.

The airline's chairman resigned in late 2016, less than a week after the crash of an ATR-42 aircraft killed 47 people. The passengers remained safe in the accident, but the plane suffered considerable damage, it added.

In 2012, a Boeing 737-200 operated by Pakistan's Bhoja Air crashed in bad weather on its approach to land in Rawalpindi, killing all 121 passengers and six crew.
