Prince Charles Wants Brits To Harvest Crops Amid Coronavirus Pandemic

Prince Charles Wants Brits To Harvest Crops Amid Coronavirus Pandemic”

The government has set up a new "Pick for Britain" website to help people find work on farms.

Because of the level of training and skill required - the industry is particularly looking for those who can work for the duration of the summer harvest between the months of May and September.

Charles backed the Government's initiative to convey United Kingdom staff and farmers collectively to make sure crops are usually not left to rot within the floor throughout the coronavirus outbreak. If we are to harvest British fruit and vegetable this year we need an army of people to help.

'We believe that those who are furloughed may be getting to the point that they want to lend a hand and play their part.

United Kingdom farmers have so far struggled to recruit Brits to help pick fruit and veg, raising fears about thousands of tonnes of food going to waste in fields.

Defra launched the initiative "Pick for Britain" last month to bring workers and employers together as the impact of Covid-19 leaves a diminished workforce.

The scheme introduced by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, aims to get British workers - including those on furlough - to help the farming industry during these times of national crisis.

The prince, who runs an organic farm at his home in Gloucestershire, says in the video: "Food does not happen by magic, it all begins with our remarkable farmers and growers".

Prince Charles has backed the government's campaign, saying in a video message that the "hard graft" of harvesting would be "hugely important" to avoid food waste.

Peak periods for harvesting produce run from June to the autumn and it is hoped that people from students to laid-off hospitality workers will take the opportunity. "If the last few weeks have proved anything, it's that food is valued and precious, and it can not be taken for granted".

He compared the need for harvesters for the Pick for Britain campaign to the importance of the army in World War II, a movement where women and girls volunteered or were recruited to undertake agricultural work after many men left the country to fight.

'So, I can exclusively urge you to Pick For Britain'. The phrase I have often heard is "pickers who are stickers". But it's of the utmost significance and, on the peak of this global pandemic, you may be making an important contribution to the nationwide effort.
