At least 1 passenger SURVIVES Pakistani plane crash”

"Although the public sector national carrier's administration has been mismanaged for decades, this never reflected the engineering competence", said Burzine Waghmar, a member of the Centre for the Study of Pakistan at SOAS University of London.

"But we are still to determine whether these 57 people were all on board the flight or include area residents as a number of houses have been badly damaged by the aircraft when it crashed", Sindh Health Minister Azra Pechuho was quoted as saying by news agency PTI. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief media.

Footage shows a number of locals carrying Masood, their arms like a stretcher, stumbling over the wreckage as they struggled to keep him from falling.

At least 57 bodies have been recovered from the site of the crash. It was not immediately clear if the casualties were passengers.

The Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA) said the aircraft was carrying 107 people, including 99 passengers and eight crew members.

Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani also offered his honest commiserations to the people and the government of Pakistan, saying that his "heart went out to the families of those who died in the crash".

"We are proceeding direct, sir - we have lost engine", a pilot said.

An air traffic controller asks whether it is going to carry out a "belly landing", to which the pilot replies "mayday, mayday, mayday" - the final communication from the plane.

"Sir - mayday, mayday, mayday, mayday Pakistan 8303", the pilot said before the transmission ended.

Pakistan recently began resuming domestic flights last week, starting with 20 per cent of capacity. Pakistan has been in a countrywide lockdown since mid-March because of the novel coronavirus.

Flight PK-303 from Lahore was about to land in Karachi when it crashed at the Jinnah Garden area near Model Colony in Malir, just a minute before its landing, a report said.

In 2016, a PIA jet burst into flames after one of its two turboprop engines failed while flying from the remote northern to Islamabad, killing more than 40 people.

Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan said he was "shocked and saddened" by the crash, tweeting that he was in touch with the state airline's chief executive. Immediate inquiry will be instituted. "Our condolences to the families of the deceased, and wishing speedy recovery to those injured", he wrote on Twitter.
