Group Says Veterans Could Be Excluded From CARES Act Grants”

These federal funds can also help support the schools and programs eligible under the Native Hawaiian Education Act, which creates educational opportunities for Native Hawaiian children.

Phil Weiler, vice president for Marketing and Communications, said the money awarded to each student ranged from $500 to $1,500 depending on their financial situation.

In order to receive CARES Act funding from the university, students had to complete a self-certification survey which they received via text or email, he said.

Students had to be eligible for Title IV aid to receive a grant. They had to have a completed FAFSA for the current academic year. Colleges were invited to apply for grants, and most institutions in Polk County already have received funding.

The college gave the grants to almost 1,500 eligible students who were enrolled either full or part-time on March 11th when in-person classes were transitioned to remote instruction after the coronavirus shut down the campus.

WSU received $21.76 million from the CARES Act, and the money will be split between students and the university's COVID-19 expenses. Bennett said they'll be rolling out a program for summer grants in a few days. The school has awarded grants totaling more than $1.1 million to 2,969 students, with a small amount from other sources added to the federal funds. The school is still determining how the money will be used after half is awarded to students, spokeswoman Dana Davis said.

The department has said it is only implementing the emergency grants based on the language of the CARES Act. Finally, grant award amounts were set in a consistent manner based upon each applicant's AY2020 expected family contribution (EFC) and 2020 spring semester enrollment percentage. "Other examples of eligibility include a student in the residence hall who moved out because of the closure and experienced higher rent and food costs than the residence hall room and board rates". These funds are in addition to the special scholarships of $200 for full-time graduate and undergraduate students who choose to take summer courses.

The $1.3 million is the second-smallest allotment in Florida's State University System, reflecting the student population of the state's newest university.
