WHO Director General: New Coronavirus Cases See Biggest Increase In Single Day”

Giroir alluded to a resolution passed Tuesday by the WHO's assembly calling on Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus to launch a "comprehensive evaluation" of the WHO-coordinated worldwide response to the outbreak "at the earliest appropriate moment".

The WHO was also getting to grips with US President Donald Trump's reform ultimatum, giving the organisation 30 days to overhaul its operations otherwise its biggest contributor would freeze its funding and consider pulling out altogether.

This means "we still have a long way to go in the pandemic", WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said.

Mike Ryan, executive director of WHO's health emergencies program, said funding from the U.S. goes to a program that helps countries all over the world in "all sorts of fragile and hard settings".

"We have seen many South American countries with increasing numbers of cases", World Health Organization emergencies director Mike Ryan told a virtual news conference.

The WHO chief said if the resolution is implemented, it would ensure a more coherent, coordinated and fairer response that saves both lives and livelihoods.

With its curve of infections and deaths rising sharply, the country of 210 million ranks third in the world in terms of total cases, behind the United States and Russian Federation.

"COVID-19 vaccines should be classified as a global public good for health in order to bring the pandemic to an end", he said, adding that this is one of the four critical points from the resolution by World Health Assembly.

Trump accused the World Health Organization of ignoring reports of the novel coronavirus spreading in China in December and accused it of failing to share "critical information" regarding the outbreak, after having earlier accused the body of being China-centric.

Reporters showered him with questions over the letter, but Tedros did not elaborate.

Meanwhile, Teros said he has received a letter from Trump, but didn't want to comment further.

He said that such a review will ensure there is a thorough understanding of the "source, timeline of events, and decision-making process for the WHO's response to the COVID-19 pandemic".

Asked Wednesday when that might be, Tedros said: "When all the conditions we need are actually met".

China says it has been frank about the development of the epidemic in China, publishing the genetic code of the virus in January and being quick to share information with the WHO. Most state officials have warned that hospitals are becoming overwhelmed and are on the verge of collapse because of the boom in new cases.

Brazil is the "most affected" South American country, and authorities there have approved broad use of the anti-malarial drug hydroxychloroquine for treatment of COVID-19, he said.
