David Luiz set to leave Arsenal this summer with contract expiring

David Luiz set to leave Arsenal this summer with contract expiring”

It had been reported by a section of the United Kingdom tabloids that the player had signed a two-year deal when he arrived but Sky has revealed that the initial agreement was just on a 12 months deal.

Top-flight teams have been stepping up preparations for Project Restart next month and Luiz has been back at the club's training ground and looked to be in high spirits with the rest of his team-mates.

Luiz is out of contract next month and according to Sky Sports, and there have not been any negotiations over a new deal by Arsenal. The defender has made 32 appearances in all competitions this season - including all 10 Premier League games since the Spaniard took charge in December.

Arsenal are already on the lookout for a new centre back but losing David Luiz will however probably not make them sign two defenders in the summer since they have a lot of priorities with a low budget and so Mikel Arteta will have to internally replace the Brazilian global.

Obviously, Arteta is said to be a fond admirer of the defender's qualities on and off the playing field and it remains to be seen whether the club can agree on a possible renewal with a pay-cut which may suit both parties.

David Luiz set to leave Arsenal after just one season with his contract up next month

However, it appears that he only agreed on a 12-month contract with the option for another year and the club are now reluctant to trigger the extension amid the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

However, earlier this month he gave a clue to the where his future may lie, telling Brazilian television network SporTV: "I always said that I would like to end my career at Benfica".

Premier League clubs are allowed to enter into short-term contract extensions with players whose current deals expire on June 30.

He spent four years with the club from 2007-2011 and recently expressed his desire to return.
