Ontario MOH not in favour of regionally based COVID-19 reopenings

Ontario MOH not in favour of regionally based COVID-19 reopenings”

The City of Toronto has updated a map of location-based COVID-19 data after the one released Wednesday contained incorrect data.

While Ontario continues to add new COVID-19 cases daily, a large number of them are being recorded in communities in the Greater Toronto Area, while other regions are seeing low numbers of new cases, including London, which saw three on Thursday.

De Villa has previously said that TPH analysis based on race-based and socio-economic data suggest that people in areas that have the highest proportion of lower income earners or the highest proportion of recent immigrants and high unemployment rates are experiencing higher rates of COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations.

The area with the highest amount of cases is now the Glenfield-Jane Heights neighbourhood with 286.

"These numbers represent people, people in our city", she said.

Activists, journalists, public officials and other experts have always been saying that this virus has disproportionately affected low-income and marginalized people, many of whom are the essential workers who've kept society running throughout lockdown measures.

The accurate map shows the northwest quadrant to have the highest volume of cases per 100,000 residents.

Of the total 26,866 lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Ontario, 20,673 are now considered to be resolved.

Meanwhile, Dr.de Villa said today that the new map will serve as a tool to address these inequities that are clearly prevalent within Toronto.

"These cases are our friends, they are our colleagues and they are our family members".
