US PGA John Deere Classic will not be played”

"Because of the ongoing health and safety concerns related to the coronavirus pandemic, the hard decision was made to cancel the 2020 John Deere Classic", said tournament director Clair Peterson.

"Because of the continuing COVID-19 restrictions around events and public gatherings in the surrounding area, the 2020 John Deere Classic has been canceled", officials said on the website.

Tournament director Clair Peterson told Golf Digest, Golfweek and the Golf Channel that the Classic would not be staged July 9-12 as planned under the revamped tour schedule.

The PGA Tour said a new tournament to be named will fill that vacated week.

There's an opening in the July calendar on the PGA Tour after the cancellation Thursday of the John Deere Classic.

"Because of the ongoing health and safety concerns related to the coronavirus pandemic, the hard decision was made to cancel the 2020 John Deere Classic", said tournament director Clair Peterson.

Steve Stricker, Jordan Spieth and Bryson DeChambeau are among the event's former winners, while South Africa's Dylan Frittelli remains defending champion after a two-shot victory in 2019.

The PGA Tour is set to resume its season without spectators June 11-14 with the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial in Fort Worth, Texas.

Ongoing coronavirus restrictions in the state of IL ban gatherings of more than 50 people and those were expected to still be in place during the week of the John Deere event.

"They felt if we don't have fans it's just a TV show and that's not what the tournament is about", said a PGA Tour insider who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he wasn't at liberty to speak on the subject.
