Atlanta Cops Fired After College Students Violently Arrested On Live TV”

Two Atlanta police officers who were captured on video forcibly pulling a pair of college students out of their vehicle and placing them under arrest during protests Saturday night have been fired, Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms announced Sunday.

Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms said at a news conference that she and police Chief Erika Shields made the decision after reviewing body-camera footage of a Saturday night incident that first gained attention from video online and on local news.

"Use of excessive force is never acceptable", Bottoms told reporters.

During Sunday's press conference, Bottoms said that five officers were involved in the arrest of Pilgrim and Young, but a review of body camera footage indicated that two of the officers used excessive force.

"Black men are routinely killed, whether it's by police or other individuals, the reality of it is we've diminished the value on their life. of course people are upset", she said.

"This video was really shocking to watch, how we were manhandling a couple of young people in their vehicle", Shields said. Shields called the footage "really shocking to watch". She didn't identify the students or the officers.

The officer suffered significant injuries to his legs and remained in the intensive care unit Sunday evening, Shields said, adding that she hopes he'll be able to walk again. "He speaks and he makes it worse", Bottoms said, referring to Trump's reaction to the white supremacist rally held there in 2017 by saying there were "very fine people on both sides".

"I know that we've caused further fear to you in a space that's already so fearful for so many African Americans and I am genuinely sorry". A reporter said police also flattened the tires.

Guard soldiers had helped enforce a 9 p.m. curfew Saturday in Atlanta, where violence has marred otherwise peaceful protests since Friday.

The city remains under curfew until sunrise Monday.

The Atlanta Police Department did not respond to Newsweek's request for comment by publication time.
