Messi reveals what COVID-19 will cause”

The Bundesliga have led the way by playing fixtures behind closed doors but there are still concerns of the long-term future of football around the world as clubs, leagues and the economy of the game looks to revive after the recent suspension.

However, Messi has admitted it is tricky to focus on football given the huge impact of coronavirus, speaking out about the "frustration" of being unable to save or protect loved ones, and his belief that football - as with the rest of life - will have to face up to enormous changes because of the pandemic.

"I've said it many times, that my idea is to continue and as long as the club and the people continue to want that, there will never be a problem for me", said the attacker in an interview with the aforementioned media before the start of the pandemic.

"I am sure that football and sport, in general, will be affected".

"[We'll remember the pandemic] with a feeling of grief and frustration for those who suffered the most due to the loss of their loved ones". Financially, because there are companies linked with the world of sport that will maybe experience some difficulties because of the coronavirus. "It will be a odd situation for us as athletes but also for anyone that has to change their usual work dynamic".

Messi donated more than €1 million to hospitals and charities fighting the coronavirus, both in Catalonia, where he has lived since joining Barca as a teenager, and in his native Argentina.

"Most of us are left with doubts about what the world is going to be like after everything that has happened".

"People have lost family and friends and were not even able to say goodbye".

"There can be nothing worse than losing the people you love the most, that creates enormous frustration for me and seems to me the most unfair thing of all", the six-time Ballon d'Or victor said. "That, for me, is hugely frustrating and unfair".

When La Liga resumes Barcelona will find themselves top of the table by two points from main rivals Real Madrid, although Messi suggested that the return of football would not help ease the suffering of what has happened as a result of Covid-19.
