Protesters rally in Toronto against anti-black, Indigenous racism”

And with the recent death of African-American man George Floyd, people are gathering across North America to say that police brutality needs to end. The police officers on the scene have already been interviewed but the unit still needs to speak to the victim's family. It expects to interview the family later this week.

In Toronto, protesters chanted "not another black life", "abolish the police", and "no justice, no peace" as they wound through the downtown streets clad in face masks to prevent the spread of COVID-19. In particular, people are asking why Toronto's Mobile Crisis Intervention Team, a unit specifically created to respond to calls involving mental health crises, was not in attendance at the apartment before Regis fell to her death.

An online petition calling for transparency in the investigation has amassed over 161,000 signatures.

Ontario's police watchdog says it is aware of the allegations being made online about Toronto police and the circumstances surrounding a 29-year-old woman falling to her death from an apartment building balcony. Campbell's family said he suffered from mental illness.

Revolutionary socialists have always been in the forefront of the struggle against racism and police brutality.

Korchinski-Paquet was an active member of her church, a talented gymnast and proud of her Ukrainian and Nova Scotian roots, her family's lawyer said.

Police Chief Mark Saunders said during a press conference Friday he hoped any protest in Toronto is one that is legal and peaceful. They talked about how hard a time it has been for Korchinski-Paquet's mother.

"Those marching today also reflected our shared need for answers in the tragic death of Regis Korchinski-Paquet".

While it is not entirely clear what happened next, soon after the police arrived, Regis asked to go to the washroom inside her apartment.

Gomez said people are oblivious to the fact that police brutality against Black people happens in Canada.

Korchinski-Paquet's uncle and cousin were present at the protest.

Singh has since said those accusations would not be part of the family's official statement, but that they would instead wait for the evidence before coming to any further conclusions.

A memorial has been setup at the apartment building, located at 100 High Park Avenue.

Korchinski-Paquet's mother, Claudette Beals-Clayton, told reporters she wanted police to diffuse the situation and then take her daughter to the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health so she could get help. At some point later, an officer came out and and told the family that her daughter had fallen to the ground where she died.

"There's no way I'd put a nurse in the middle of a knife fight", Saunders said last week.

"I just want to make sure that everything's okay", Saunders said.

After a few minutes, Mr. Singh said, Ms. Korchinski-Paquet called out, "Mom, help!"

The SIU is an independent agency that investigates the conduct of officers responding to calls that have resulted in death, serious injury, or alleged sexual assault.

Chief Saunders said this case is a "textbook" example of the need for body-worn cameras, which he said he plans to begin allocating within the next few months.
