Ontario Premier Doug Ford expected to make another COVID-19 announcement”

Mayor Jim Watson has asked Premier Doug Ford to consider reopening the City of Ottawa's economy as part of a regional approach to relaxing COVID-19 restrictions.

"I think he has an open mind to it because he recognizes - a good example is barber shops for instance, they are open across the river but not open here - and a regional approach for instance would allow barber shops to reopen if we go to phase 2", Watson said.

As of Tuesday evening, there have been 28,709 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Ontario, with 22,484 cases now resolved. These facilities have been allowed to continue operating takeout and delivery.

The premier announced last week that his government will now be considering a regional approach to reopening the economy due to the fact that testing has ramped up across the province.

The recovery rate remains at 78-percent.

Ontario completed 17,537 tests in the previous day, more than the 16,000 the province has pledged - but often failed - to do since the beginning of May, but still short of the government's goal of 20,000 a day.

Included under the province's state of emergency are a number of emergency orders, including those banning social gatherings of more than five people who are not from the same household and prohibiting restaurants from opening.

The extension, under s.7.0.7 of the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act, was approved by the Ontario legislature earlier Tuesday.

Numbers of new cases have gone up and down in the two weeks since Ontario entered stage one, and the province has previously said it wants to see a consistent, two-to-four-week decline in new cases before reopening more.
