Giant asteroid to zip toward Earth this weekend. But don’t freak out

Giant asteroid to zip toward Earth this weekend. But don’t freak out”

2002 NN4 was discovered in July 2002 and is expected to approach the Earth on June 6.

According to NASA's Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS), the object 2020 KA6 that would hurtle by Earth on June 5 ranges in 12m-28m in diameter.

While the space rock will fly by safely, it has been classified as a "potentially hazardous asteroid" (PHA) due to its size and distance. It has a relative velocity of 24,050 kmph.

An asteroid potentially larger than the CN Tower is set to hurtle past Earth on Saturday.

However, most of those are small - under 100 metres in diameter.

If this is all giving you a déjà vu, it's because back in April, NASA warned us of yet another asteroid, this one called 52768 (1998 OR2), coming dangerously close to us humans. It will be followed by the arrival of 2020 KQ1 at 12:39 p.m. EDT.

There are three main types of asteroids: the C-type (chondrite) which are most common and most ancient and consist of clay and silicate rocks, and are dark in appearance; the S-types ("stony") which are made up of silicate materials and nickel-iron; and the M-types, which are metallic (nickel-iron).

But it will only get as close as about 3.16 million miles.

To be clear, these four asteroids aren't the only space rocks visiting our neck of the woods this month. Fortunately, the asteroid will only pass by, and no collision would happen, according to NASA.

Saturday's visit will be the closest 2002 NN4 has passed by the Earth since 1965, when it sped by the Earth with just a little more than one million kilometres of room to spare.

Before its visit, an asteroid known as 2020 KA6, which spans about 92 feet wide, will fly past Earth at 12:41 p.m. EDT at a speed of nearly 26,000 miles per hour.

Asteroid 2002 NN4 is estimated to be 250-570 meters (820-1,870 feet) in diameter, according to NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL).

Asteroid 2002 NN4 will come within.05 astronomical units, or roughly 4.6 million miles, of Earth.

Apart from these two asteroids, there is even a larger asteroid that has a massive size.
