We reiterate our pledge to preserve our planet's rich biodiversity: PM”

PM Modi also attached the excerpts from his Mann Ki Baat episode, where he talked about the biodiversity, the theme of the World Environment Day this year. The main aim is to raise awareness to protect nature and look at various environmental issues.

I wish the World Environment Day celebrations in Sri Lanka held under the theme "Biodiversity - Spaces for Nature" every success.

Inger Andersen, executive director of the UNEP, emphasised that "World Environment Day is a powerful platform to accelerate, amplify and engage people, communities and governments around the world to take action on critical environmental challenges facing the planet".

World Environment Day (WED) is celebrated on 5 June every year. It was created on the first day of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment. Biodiversity is the foundation of ecosystem services to which human well-being is intimately linked. The balance that is needed in the earth's biodiverse ecosystem has been eroded.

Net Impact, being a non-profit membership organization for students and professionals interested in using business skills in support of various social and environmental causes, acknowledges that the preservation of nature has to be prioritized and the time for action is now. A healthy ecosystem has a rich biodiversity and is important in sustaining the lives of Caribbean people, including cleaning the air, purifying water, providing food, shelter, natural medicines/raw materials, recreation, fuel, climate resilience and storm protection.

Time has come when we respect nature and other organisms as they do. Human beings fail to understand their faithfulness towards the environment. Shekhar said human actions, including deforestation, encroachment on wildlife habitats, intensified agriculture, and acceleration of climate change, have pushed the nature beyond its limit.

However, he added, the world seems to be getting worse due to climate change as even the countries's commitments to stop global warming, such as reducing carbon emissions to the atmosphere, is not enough to heal the world.

He identified others as the annual Tree Planting Day through which over seven million trees of various species have been planted across the state to enrich its biodiversity.

She further noted "the co-benefits of greening the country (including the health sector) as well as addressing environmental determinants of health such as climate change, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), air pollution and preventing chemical poisoning hazards which ranges from reduced health care cost through prevention of communicable and non-Communicable diseases to strengthening inter-sectoral approach towards UHC". As it is believed one small change can bring about a greater change, to make the world a better place to live in.
