Saudi Arabia to witness annular solar eclipse on June 21

Saudi Arabia to witness annular solar eclipse on June 21”

What is an annular solar eclipse? There are four kinds of solar eclipses, namely a total eclipse, an annular eclipse, a hybrid eclipse, and a partial eclipse.

New Delhi: After two lunar eclipses, solar eclipse is going to happen on June 21.

The National Astronomy Center at King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) explained that this eclipse occurs when the moon is perfectly aligned between the sun and the earth. While a larger swath of the world will be able to view a partial eclipse, Americans will miss the event altogether since it will occur on the evening of June 20 and end by sunrise on June 21, 2020.

Well, a solar eclipse is an astronomical event observed when the sun, the moon, and the Earth are in alignment only during a new moon. As the Moon's shadow falls on Earth, it causes the Sun to briefly "disappear" for those directly in the path of its umbra - the part of the shadow where all sunlight is blocked out.

If you are planning to see the annular solar eclipse, do not forget to carry proper eye protection like eclipse glasses. As the Moon is smaller in size than the Sun, the latter appears as an annulus or very bright ring of light that surrounds the dark Moon. The most recent annular solar eclipse occurred a year ago on December 26.

The center said that the eclipse will be seen in Makkah region, covering 70.88 percent with a total duration of two hours and 27 minutes.

During any type of eclipse, there are a few dos and don'ts which most follow.

Both visibility and timing of the eclipse are dependent on location. It will be visible in parts of Africa including the Central African Republic, Congo, Ethiopia, Pakistan, India, and China. According to TimeAndDate, the annular solar eclipse will be visible at the first location on June 21, 2020, at around 9:15 AM IST and will be visible at the last location on at around 3:04 PM IST.
