AstraZeneca agrees to supply Europe with 400mn doses of Covid-19 vaccine

AstraZeneca agrees to supply Europe with 400mn doses of Covid-19 vaccine”

A sign is seen at an AstraZeneca site in Macclesfield May 19, 2014. The researchers are now working towards a large scale clinical trial which involves testing the vaccine on 10,000 people.

"This agreement will ensure that hundreds of millions of Europeans have access to the Oxford University's vaccine following its approval", AstraZeneca's CEO Pascal Soriot said.

The agreement signed by the Anglo-Swedish company and Europe's Inclusive Vaccines Alliance will also make the vaccine available to any European Union country that wishes to take part in the initiative.

"We look forward to beginning our Phase 3 study of mRNA-1273 with some 30,000 participants in July", said Tal Zaks, MD, PhD, Moderna's Chief Medical Officer.

The experimentation phase of the vaccine is already advanced and expected to end in the autumn, Italian Health Minister Roberto Speranza said in a Facebook post.

The American biotech company, touted as the frontrunner in the race for developing a vaccine for the deadly disease, says it has made all the arrangements as required by the FDA and will start the study next month.

The doses "must be distributed to all member states that want to participate, depending on the size of their population", the ministry said.

De Jonge said that the risks attached to making such an investment, before the vaccine had been proved to work, were not outweighed by the social importance and that the four countries, united as the Inclusive Vaccines Alliance, are still in talks with other developers. "A vaccine is crucial in combating the virus". 'We are therefore betting on more than one horse, because you don't know in advance which one will win'.

The deal is the latest by AstraZeneca to pledge supply of its vaccine to governments who have scrambled to agree advance purchases of promising coronavirus vaccines.
