Band-Aid announces plans to release racially diverse range of bandages

Band-Aid announces plans to release racially diverse range of bandages”

In the comment section of Band Aid's Wednesday announcement, some Instagram users - apparently unfamiliar with the company's defunct Perfect Blend line - questioned why multi-shade Band Aids weren't previously available.

Band-Aid shared new bandages in a diverse range of skin tones on Instagram this week, but it's not clear if Canadians will be able to purchase the darker colours.

"We are dedicated to inclusivity and providing the best healing solutions, better representing you", the brand wrote.

"We are excited to bring back a similar product with improved comfort and flexibility", Band-Aid said in a statement emailed to CNN Business, noting that it first launched clear bandages in the 1950s.

The brand, which is owned by cosmetics giant Johnson & Johnson, said the new products would be rolled out in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement, which is continuing the gain momentum in the U.S. and across the world, sparked by the death of George Floyd in May. "In addition, we will be making a donation to @blklivesmatter".

In an email, a spokeswoman for Johnson & Johnson Consumer Cos. said Band-Aid plans to launch a range of bandages in light, medium and deep shades of brown in its most popular style, Flexible Fabric, next year. We promise that this is just the first among many steps together in the fight against systemic racism.

The brand has previously received criticism over its lack of representation for people of color since the product was first created in 1921, and has sold a pink "flesh" color for almost a century, according to the company's website.

Bandages for other skin tones have come into the marketplace before.
