California examines Amazon's business practices”

That probe examined whether Amazon's use of data from the independent retailers that sell on its marketplace is in breach of European Union competition rules. European officials have spent the past year interviewing merchants and others who depend on Amazon's sales platform to better understand how it collects data to use to its advantage, including agreements that require them to share certain data with Amazon as a condition of selling goods on the platform. The watchdog group reportedly intends to accuse Amazon of using data from third-party sellers to compete against them.

The EU competition enforcer may soon send a charge sheet called a statement of objections to the company, outlining suspected violations of antitrust laws, the person said. Amazon was not immediately available for comment. And they come after a almost two-year investigation.

The EU's case delves into the same types of conduct, the people familiar with the matter said.

If Amazon is found guilty, the commission would be able to force Amazon to change its business practices as well as impose a one-time fine of 10% its global annual revenue. Separately, the company is also the subject of antitrust probes by the Justice Department and the Federal Trade Commission.

The charges could be filed as early as next week, according to the Journal, and the European Commission could take another year to make a decision.

Before the end of the year, Vestager is also expected to announce a proposal for how Europe can revamp antitrust rules. Google and Facebook have said they are cooperating with the inquiries. It has already fined Alphabet's Google with more than $ 9 billion in three separate cases since 2017, and all revolved around using a dominant digital platform to unfairly compete in another area.

"We need to ensure that large online platforms don't eliminate these benefits through anti-competitive behaviour".
